I have been a reviewer longer than I’ve been a blogger and one of the reasons I became a blogger is to be able to discover new authors on the romance genre. One of these authors is Erin Mallon, an accomplished playwright, and audiobook narrator. Flirtasaurus is her debut novel.
In this story, we are dealing with Calliope, a scientist heroine with a huge chip on her shoulder. She's as mature as her age, which is to say, not a lot. She meets a fellow scientist that is as stable and steady as she is crazy pants and out there. Let’s just say he has the patience of a saint. I am all for STEM heroines and I am glad to see two of my favorite science disciplines represented here. Ralph (And let me tell you, any writer that can pull a cinnamon roll hero with that name and that makes you root for him definitely has talent!) is the gooiest of heroes...We all need a Ralph in our lives, even as a friend.
We are able to see a lot of Calliope’s family and why she goes through the world the way she does. The secondary characters are well developed and I found them funnier than the main protagonists. Seeing Calliope navigate the world reminded me that we sometimes have a very narrow-minded perspective. It also reminded me that we need to appreciate the family that actually loves and appreciates us, whether they’re blood or not.
I have the sneaking suspicion that this book is going to polarize romance readers because this isn’t a conventional romance novel. I would say is more chick-lit than romance. For those of us that love the filthy sex scenes, there aren’t any descriptive scenes. That’s okay, you can certainly write a romance without them. There are some scenes that will appeal to romantic comedy lovers. I like that this book is different than what’s out there and I am always willing to go where the road takes me, but I know a lot of readers aren’t as patient. Depending on your age, the female protagonist might downright annoy the hell out of you. Romance readers like a good escape from reality and Calliope‘s personality might prove too much for some readers. So if you’re willing to deal with that, this might be the book for you.
Four Dino-sized stars to Flirtasaurus.

My name is Calliope and "I bone for a living." Kidding. I am studying to be a paleontologist though. It's the only thing I've ever wanted to be, and I have finally landed the perfect museum internship to make all of my dino-loving dreams come true.
Trouble is, everyone wants me to be a gentle, loving sort of creature, but I'm more of the T-Rex type by nature - the kind who is determined to stomp and tear her way through any obstacle in order to get what she wants.
But when a sexy, rumbly-voiced astronomer plummets into my orbit and threatens to break open my hard little heart, my career and my whole way of looking at the world is suddenly on the line.
The dinosaurs didn't see their asteroid coming.
And I sure as hell wasn't prepared for mine.
